I am wondering what could be the negative affect of disconnecting the auto by on the carborator of my 2003 tahotsu 4 stroke....seems to be starting gr8t and running ok with it disconnected thanks

Why would you want to disconnect it? It changes the mixture (starting richer, then slowly getting leaner) as the motor runs from a cold start. This means that you don't need a manual choke. I suppose you could put a different carb (with a mechanical choke) on the motor, but I see no reason to do that.

I want to disconnect it because it does not work....it does not allow me to start the engine however, it starts great and seems to run fine with it disconnected

Something odd is going on here. The ABS solenoid slowly heats, causing the needle to slowly extend, causing the slow-speed mixture to slowly go lean as the motor warms up. In other words, it does nothing at all until it starts to warm up. And, it only affects the upper (of 3) carbs. Are you saying that the carb works OK with the solenoid physically removed from the motor? If that's the case, you may need a thorough carb cleaning. You can test the solenoid (using your trusty Factory service manual as a guide), by applying 12v to the leads, and seeing if it warms and pushes the needle out over the course of a minute or three. You can also check it for proper resistance (using an analog -- not digital) ohm meter. If the heater is the ABS is dead shorted, that could (rarely) cause a problem with ignition, which could be what you are seeing.

All that said, assuming the carbs are working properly, the motor will be a bear to start in cold weather if you do not have a properly-operating ABS.

thanks very much for the info....however, let me clarify the situation, with the abs in normal the engine starts very hard and runs only a few secs and dies..I removed the needle and spring from the abs and put it back on and its starts and runs on 1st try usually...seems to be fine....???...still wondering..thanks again

Now that you have damaged your expensive ABS (can it be reassembled?), you have confirmed that either 1 - the ABS was jammed rich or 2- your carb needs cleaned and adjusted.

It can easily be reassembled....the needle pulls out of the boot ..without doing damage.....which one of the conditions would most likely cause it to not start.....with the abs in tack and cold....it wont start...if I take the screw out and lift the abs about 3/8 to 1/2 inch...its starts immediatelty and seems to be running ok although I have not taken it out on the water and tested yet

thanks again

Test ABS. It may be stuck in the extended position. If not, your carb is in need of attention. Either way, you need to be able to modulate the mixture so that you are richer at cold start, and leaner when warm.

I will check it again.....thanks again...you've been very helpfull
