are the armatures on mercury starters on the smaller outboards interchangeable---if I could find an armature I may be able to salvage my old one which is shorted out

http://www.marinepartsplus.com/catalog/mercury/serial/25XD/+13286/274-200 shows an armature for $89. In June I bought a new starter for my 1983 25HP Mercury for $121.83, which included shipping cost.

Google "18-5611" or the I.D. stamped on my old starter "50-90983A" if this is your starter.

If interested in my old starter, which has a small spot about this size [] on one of the commutator segments and is repairable I'm sure let me know; I can provide more details.
