Good news is: they are virtually indestructible.

Even better news: you can buy used outdrives on eBay at very resonable prices.

"Mercruiser= well off and busy

"Mercruiser= well off and busy mechanics, well off and busy parts dealer.

Volvo= Not so well off and not so busy mechanic, occasionally makes big sale parts dealer.

I confidently purchased a circa 1986 Volvo 280 "leg" unrebuilt (pulled off of a junked boat) to install on my boat. It ended up needing about $120 in parts and a day or so of my time.
Don't even THINK about doing that with a 1986 Mercruiser!!!! BTW... the 1969 Volvo 250 drive that I removed from my boat (and replaced with the 280) was working 100%, just had the wrong ratio for my new engine :)"

"I would NEVER buy a boat with

"I would NEVER buy a boat with a Merc after undergoing a complete VP rebuild last summer. VP's are well engineered, well built and very easy to work on. I would not hesitate to buy a boat with an older VO powerplant."
