Arc around spark plug wire on Cylinder # 4

"HI i have just changed the sp

"HI i have just changed the spark plugs on my 1976 jonhson 135 hp motor, the #4 cylinder started to arc around the boot that goes to the plug. When i first stared the engine i could hear a clicking i touch the boot and i got shocked, do i have a bad coil? Could that also cause the engine to die when i start to go fast. It was running fine until i changed the spark plugs can some body help."
 
It sounds like one of the spar

It sounds like one of the spark plug wires could have been damaged when you changed the spark plugs. Did you change the spark plugs because it was running poorly?

"I had gone to the part store to pick up the champion #UL77v plugs. They did not have them so I order them, So i got the optional plug ngk the book calls for they are the ones for slow speed, The boat was running fine with the ngk but i when to the lake yesterday and wanted to see if the engine would put out so i put the fast speed plug that when I got that problem with the arcs around spark plug. Other than that The engine sound really good Until I start to speed up .

"Sounds to me that you damaged the plug wire when changing the plugs. You need to get a replacement plug wire to fix this problem if it's in the wire only. If the coil has a crack, you'll need to get a new coil.

As a side note, I think most folks agree that NGK's just don't operate properly in a Johnson/Evinrude motor. I have no technical explanation for this, but I have read of several people that have tried NGK, received mixed results, and then switched back to Champion plugs and everything was fine. I would urge you to get the proper Champion plugs and use them in your motor.

"Kevin is right about the plugs - mostly has to do with the "resistance". Even though the cross reference may say they are the same, they are "not".

They "may" work ok or may run like crap. The bottom line is, OMC were engineered and designed to use Champion. NGK's go in your Merc's and Yamaha's..."

"Guy thank you. I got that issue fix when i pulled the boot i also pulled on the little spring inside the boot, Thanks alot for you help you guy are awsome. THis boating stuff is sure alot different then any other hooby, this is my first boat so iam really glad theres people like you to help. thank
