Hi Folks,
I have twin 1985 AQ290 outdrives. I am rebuilding them as far as new seals, gaskets, paint, etc.
Both transmissions are removed for cleanup, gaskets, seals, U-joints, Etc.
On the Starboard drive transmission, when I put it into forward or reverse, you can turn the u-joint and the driveshaft will turn in one direction, when you reverse the shifter, the drive shaft turns in the other direction, just like it should. Neutral, everything turns freely.
On the Port transmission, repeating this procedure, the u-joint appears to bind and lockup so you cannot turn it. This only happens in one direction and in Neutral, all is free moving. But in order to get the shifter, U-joint or Drive shaft to move, I have to reverse direction of the u-joint rotation.
When I removed the shift plate to replace the seal and clean it up, the gears and tooth pattern look fine. Nothing is chewed up. The Brass shifting ring is clean and smooth. Also, the shifter is a type 3. Also noticed inside the top cover, it appears that the top nut is hitting the inside of the cover. It is ground down.
Can someone help me with this bindup problem?
Thanks a bunch,
Kevin,
