Hey Folks,
Need some help here. I am rebuilding my two outdrives and need to remove the lower unit from the intermediate housing. I have removed all the bolts but I still cannot get them to split. I have rubber mallet-ed the heck out of them. Then tried a cold chisel at the seam but I am only succeeding in beating up the cases. Does anyone have any magic here that will help?
Is there a solution that will break the aluminum corrosion? am I missing something here. I will not be reusing the cases as they are really in bad shape.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Folks,

Kevin, have you removed all of the fasteners?
There are 4 vertically positioned 3/8" cap screws that face UP, and 3 vertically positioned 5/16" cap screws that face DOWN.
Be sure to apply heat at/near/on the area of the 3 - 5/16" cap screw threads.

I have rubber mallet-ed the heck out of them. Then tried a cold chisel at the seam but I am only succeeding in beating up the cases.
DO NOT drive anything between the cases. Bad Ju Ju!

Does anyone have any magic here that will help?
Yes..... patience, experience and heat (small Propane or Mapp gas torch..... NO Oxy-Acet )!

Is there a solution that will break the aluminum corrosion?
Yes.... complete replacement!
Your drive compoents are severely corroded. I would be replacing all of that.

am I missing something here. I will not be reusing the cases as they are really in bad shape.
Do you have hypoid gear work experience, and are you familiar with the Volvo Penta AQ series shimming procedures?

Hi Rick,

I got my MAPP gas torch out. Heated it up real good, then gently dropped the lower and intermediate to the garage floor from about a foot up. This sudden shock was enough to break it free.

I have had Ju Ju before. It was really good! haha

We have talked many times both here and on the phone. I have good used freshwater drives I am re-sealing with seal kits and gaskets and bearings and bushings. I got all my calculated shim clearances and have lots of shims ready.

I am breaking these two units down to keep the good stuff inside and scrap the rest.

I do have Hypoid gear experience but I am no opening up the new lower units except to replace the seal.

As Always, thanks for all your help. It is greatly appreciated.
I will post pictures too.

Kevin
