AQ250 trans needs service

I need to remove the transmission from the outdrive. Can I do this without removing the whole outdrive from the boat?
Yes, in fact this would be the preferred method......... Remove the transmission ONLY first.

Remove the set pin, and lower the drive down as far as it will lower. This will make it easier for removal and re installation.
If you need to remove any other portion of the drive, do this afterwards.

Assuming that you're actually talking about a 250 transmission....... Note that the 250 transmission main drive gear seal is much smaller than with the later transmissions.
Also, the two driven gear bearings are unique to the 250.

Given the age, I'd press the main drive gear from the bearing box, and look at the bearings... in particular the large AFT-most bearing.
The rolling torque value is shim controlled. As long as you do not loose the small shims, nothing changes when re-assembled.

However, if you do end up replacing these bearings.... a new rolling torque value will need to be set, along with a back-lash clearance adjustment.
