"Last weekend, something start

"Last weekend, something started to slip as RPM got up to 2800 to 3000 range under hard throttle. RPM would continue to climb, not drastically, but difinately not right, and the boat wasn't going the way it should. Thinking that the hub in the prop was starting to slip I stopped, anchored, and installed the spare prop, which was functioning fine when I removed it. The spare prop had no effect on the drive unit "slipping." By this time I didn't even think about hard acceleration, but eased it up on the throttle until it got to 2800-3200 RPM and again the engine revs up as if something is slipping. Where else in the outdrive could be "slipping." I wasn't aware of any clutch in the outdrive. Does anyone have any ideas? Help."

"I am having the same trouble

"I am having the same trouble with my 280 outdrive. It begins slipping when RPMs exceed 3600. It has been suggested to remove the cone clutch from the upper gearcase and lap it to remove glazing.

See part #43: http://volvopentastore.com/UPPER_GEAR_UNIT_DRIVE_280/dm/store_id.366--session_id .569189296--cart_id.443433535--category_id.333216--list_time.1196215175--view_id .328190

A mechanic at a local boatyard that services VPs told me yesterday that he has never heard of a drive slipping once underway and he has 30+ years experience. He told me that if the cone was glazed the drive would have trouble going into gear. The cones are not cheap, $221, so I am hoping I can deglaze mine.

I used to run 80 weight gear oil in my outdrive and it never slipped. After an extensive rebuild this summer I headed the advice of many in this forum and ran the same oil as in my engine, 15W 40, as VP recommends. Next summer I am going to return to the heavier 80 weight oil and see if this resolves the slipping.

If your boat is still in the water, I would suggest draining the oil in the drive and replacing it with some 80W gear oil. You may also want to try the Volvo 75W 90 synthetic oil and see if that works.

Good luck and report your findings."
