"I'm interested in a 1988
"I'm interested in a 1988 boat with a possible hung intake valve. I think it is an AQ131C or D. The engine was fine when it was hauled at the end of last season but did not run properly when recommissioned this summer. It starts and idles fine but pops and breaks down when given throttle. It was hauled and a compression test showed 170 PSI in the first 3 cylinders and 130 in cylinder 4. There is no water in the oil. A marine mechanic determined that there is possibly a hung intake valve. Assuming that a complete valve job is now indicated, would it be okay to purchase a good Volvo 240 cylinder head from an automotive salvage yard, have it checked for cracks, planed down and installed rather than rebuild the original? This would be the cheaper and quickest fix of the two choices. The engine is all original and has never been rebuilt. The mechanic told me that an automotive 240 or 740 is interchangeable with the AQ231."
