"I've fitted a 300 hr 225D in my boat to replace the old AQ200. It started and ran fine-for about 5 minutes, then died,a and wouldn't fire again-not even a cough. 20 minutes later, fired up instantly, then after 5 minutes or so, the same. I found water in the fuel tank, cleaned that and the fuel filter, and it seemed to be ok.
Monday took her for a seatrial, ran sweetly for over an hour-including 25knots+ across the solent and back, cruised beautifully up through the harbour, then as we passed thru the marina at tickover, died-and not the slightest spark of life on the key. Not a cough or a hiccup-just turned and turned. Splashed some fuel down the carb chokes-started instantly and ran smoothly. I'm thinking fuel pump? Fuel system is unchanged from old engine, which had no problems in this way."

I had a very simular problem and thought it was the fuel pump.I changed fuel pump and filters. Re built the carb and the same thing happened. Come to find out it was a blocked fuel tank vent. I put a new better vent on the exterior of the boat and no problems since. When you put gas in your boat does it fill in a timely mannor? or does it take in the gas very slow. This would be a indication that the vent has some issues. Just a thought for you.

"Thanks mate-good idea, hadn't thought of the vent. Haven't noticed any problem fuelling, but I'll certainly check it.
Cheers"

"P of E..... (process of elimination).... One item..... one item only at a time, and go down your list of probable causes so that you don't chase your tail too far.

If we throw unnecessary parts at a problem with the intent of correcting it.... we WILL eventually fix it, but we may never know what the actual cause was.
The P of E will set you up for better diagnosing something similar in the future.

Jeff gives you a good suggestion.... that and any component in the fuel delivery system since you mention water in the fuel. "

"The quick and easy (and cheap) test for this is to loosen the fuel filler cap when running.

My guess for #2 POE try, is that there is still water in the fuel... Water separator (if equipped) is full, if not so equipped, the bowl of the carb is full of water. Most folks don't know that in a pinch, one can drain the water out of a "cartridge type" combo particle filter/water separator just by pouring it out...into a suitable container, of course... but NOT while inside the boat."

"If you had water in the fuel

"If you had water in the fuel and you have a water separating filter installed between the fuel tank and the engine, consider either draining it and/or replacing it depending on the filter type. Make also sure the anti-syphon valve in the fuel tank is not stuck in the (almost) closed position."

"Sorry chaps, should have said

"Sorry chaps, should have said that I emptied the filter out after I found the water in the tank. Was intending to take the top off the carb and clean out the bowl-may still do, in fact, but as she runs so sweetly once she's going..I have the fuel pump off the old engine,so am going to try that first.
Anti syphon valve? Where and what will it look like?"

"It is a little spring-loaded

"It is a little spring-loaded check valve that is usually attached to the pick-up line on top of the fuel tank.

Also, some removable pick-up lines may have a strainer on the suction side. If the strainer becomes clogged, your engine's fuel pump will not be able to suck any gasoline from the tank."
