Getting ready to do the drive and exhaust bellows on my 1986 bayliner 2150 due to old age and cracking. Been reading up on the on the procedures and it seem pretty straight forward.275 drive, looks like you can change them with out pulling complete outdrive. Can't find spec for oil type for drive, found 3 different weights. Looks like it has Mercury hpl in it now, haven' personally ran it much. My question is would running hpl cause any problems? What would be preferred oil to run? Any help would be appreciated , trying to get boat finished by the time my son comes home from his mid -tour leave from the military, he wants to do some fishing with his pops. Thanks in advance

Quicksilver High Performance Lubricant is a SAE 90 oil. The oils recommended for your drive are the same you use you use for the engine (SAE10W/30, SAE10W/40 or SAE20W/40).

Yes on pulling the transmission only.
Even if the entire drive needs to be removed, pull the transmission first, and re-install it last.

As for the single prop 275 drive oil, if you use heavy gear oil, you'll put a strain of the lower unit slinger pump drive pins.
If you were to loose the slinger pump, you'll not receive an oil exchange between the lower unit and upper unit.
This oil exchange is what cools the upper unit.

Use 30W if in cold water..... use 40W if in warm Florida waters, for example.

While you have the transmission removed, reach in, clamp onto the PDS and pull up/down/sideways on it.
If you feel even some play, these are in need of replacement.
This is NOT a perfect science, however.

Many of these older boats have had only one PDS bearing replacement in their life time.... and hardly anyone remembers to service them.
If you were to loose the aft-most bearing, you'll be looking at a very large repair expense.
