"Hi all you knowledgeable ones

"Hi all you knowledgeable ones-bear with me, it's a bit of a saga, but I want to give you all the background.
Engine was seized-hadn't run for over two years.
Stripped the heads off-valves seized and 3 pushrods broken-heads were refurbished, oil left on top of pistons, then engine was eased over with plenty of oil on the bores and freed off.
Rebuilt the heads, overhauled all the valve lifters, engine reassembled.
Recon 2-barrel Rochester acquired as original had corroded beyond repair. Distributor overhauled with new points etc, new cap, leads and plugs.
So.....
fires and runs quite eagerly, but a bit lumpy, on opening the throttle, gets to about 2000 rpm and starts coughing and spitting making large 'sucking' noises from the carb....won't rev any faster, but happy to idle and run at lower revs.
Did a compression check today.
With the engine cold, had between 115 and 135psi on 7 cylinders, but only 60 on #4.Squirted some oil in there, ran the engine for 10 minutes or so, now have 120psi on #4...but symptoms are the same-won't go above 2k. Set ignition and timing again, no different.
My thoughts-
carb?
low compression (would it cause this?)
or-the spring on the (new) points seems very weak-could they be 'bouncing' at higher revs?
Anyone who's bothered to read this far got any thoughts?"

"Sounds like a dumb question,

"Sounds like a dumb question, but have you verified the firing order of the ignition wires? If you have swapped a couple of them, that could give your the symptoms you are describing."

"It looks like while I was typing my reply, Robert A. Fierro gave you the same answer in the other thread you posted...."

"sorry about the double postin

"sorry about the double posting-my computer is...being a pita...
yes, one of the first things i (double) checked was the firing order-it's as cast onto the inlet manifold, so i guess it's correct?"

"Port cylinders from forward to aft are 1, 3, 5, 7; starboard are 2, 4, 6, 8. Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2."

"yep, from memory that looks right.
i will triple check next time i'm there-what do you think about the contact breaker points theory El P? I've never come across a set with such a 'soft' spring-think i will try another set just to satisfy myself."

"I am the wrong person to ask

"I am the wrong person to ask about points, as everyone in the forum knows by now that I am strongly against those archaic stupid things that belong in a museum rather than on an engine distributor. I am strongly in favour of replacing points with Pertronix electronic ignition kits. They are inexpensive upgrades and they work really well.

And before you ask: no, I am not a salesman for Pertronix nor collect any kind of commission of any sort for speaking well about those electronic ignition kits .

am going to look for those kit

am going to look for those kits now-are they available in the UK? you're right about points-they are an absolute pain!

"Not sure if they are availabl

"Not sure if they are available in the UK. Their web site is http://www.pertronix.com/ they are the best suited to answer your question.

Regarding the kit type, you must find out what distributor you have. It is probably a Prestolite IBM-7011A or IBM-7013A. This link will tell you which kits are available.

Also, I know Sierra carries those kits."

"Thanks EP
can get electronic

"Thanks EP
can get electronic conversion kits here at about a pound/dollar equivalent, so will try a new set of points to see the effect and upgrade if I fix it!
Will report the outcome in due course."
