AQ171c PDS Bearing!

Hi all,
This winter I am taking the drives off for their biennial service and overhaul where I will be replacing the bellows etc.
I have seen in recent posts that whilst the drives are off, it is good time to replace the PDS bearings.
I have no known problems “at this time” but mindful of the age of the drives so I was just thinking .... How difficult are they to change on the AQ171c as I assumed it was an engine out job?
Thanks in advance.

You do not need to pull the engines to replace the PDS bearings there are two snap rings under the rear seal and then you should be able to pull the PDS shaft. Do you have the 290 drive or the SP-E drive?

It has the single PDS bearing just pull the outer seal and there are two large inside snap rings I ground the tips of a long pair of needlenose pliers to hook the rings. If necessary just drill a hole center of the shaft and tap it so you can use a slide hammer to pull the shafts. I found a speedisleeve to repair the PDS shaft at the front seal if the sealing surface on the shaft is all pitted.

Tip:
Remove the Transmission ONLY as your first item to be removed.
Remove hinge pins/Intermediate housing ONLY if related work requires removal.
Install Transmission last when going back together.

Yes..... damage caused by a failed PDS bearing can be very expensive to repair.

For the early AQ series GM V Engines, Volvo Penta incorporated a double bearing PDS. This PDS bearing replacement requires Engine removal.

For the Volvo Penta AQ series in-line cylinder Engines, and for the AQ series Ford V-8s and all later GM V Engines, Volvo Penta incorporated a single bearing PDS w/ a pilot nose. This PDS bearing replacement does not require Engine removal.
