Hi All,

I really would appreciate input from anyone who could help with starting my Volvo AQ170A....

Last year the engine started and ran fine but I had to take the engine out to replace the exhaust.... Jump forward to this year, engine back in, but turns over & over but wont catch?

So far I have replaced/done....

Cleaned all carbs
new distributor cap
new points
new rotatory arm
new coil (Bosch blue label)
new Fuel pump
new fuel lines
new oil
new oil filter
new plugs
new plug leads

Fuel is getting to the carbs & there is a good spark, but it just wont fire.... Can anyone think of anything else?

Thanks in advance,

:(

battery fully charged? good cranking speed?...check compression first, check for water leaks into the cylinders (water droplets on plugs after cranking), use a spark tester to verify spark at the plugs(or just hold one against the block)

Next time.... replace one item at a time, and then do a test.

Bring your #1 cylinder (the forward-most cylinder) around to TDC on the Compression Stroke.
NOTE: this must be on the Comp Stroke!!!

Actually.... stop the crankshaft just about 6 degrees prior to TDC.

Place a good spark plug into the boot of an extra spark plug wire.
Place this wire directly into the ignition coil high tension socket.

Now excite the ignition (turn key switch ON)
Do NOT bump the starter motor!

Now rotate the distributor against it's normal rotation direction.

With this spark plug making good Negative engine contact.... you should be seeing a whitish/blue spark between the outer electrode and the center electrode.
This spark should snap rather loudly.

Do this several times until you get a good feel for when the spark event occurs.
When you see the spark... stop and lock the distributor clamp down.

Now place the spark plug back into the boot of #1 plug wire... of which is in the #1 cap socket.

Repeat the test above.... and check to see if the cap and/or wires are indexed correctly.
Check the firing order, and verify that all 6 plug wires follow the firing order.

If all is OK..... and if you have the 4 necessary ingredients... Proper Compression..... Fuel/Air.... Ignition Source.... and correct ignition source timing........ the engine should fire up.

Yes, it sounds like the distributor is out of phase, (not firing on the compression stroke) easy enough to happen, because TDC on the crank shows up on Cyl#1, and an opposing Cyl as well, the camshaft determines which one is ready to fire on a 4-Cycle engine.

Plus, Isn't this a 4cyl motor?

The factory TDC markings are representative of #1 cylinder.
The #1 TDC comes around twice for every compression stroke.
So yes.... it is imperative that we be on the C/S.

The AQ170 is a Volvo Penta 6 cylinder push rod Engine.

Hi all, Thanks very much for your help, we have also come to the conclusion that it must(!) be the distributor that is out of phase. Add into the fact that the distributor took a slight knock (not by me, don't ask) when the engine was being removed I should of thought of this earlier. Thanks again for every ones input. I have updated the original post with further detail.
