AQ170 no spark?

Hi All,

My AQ170 was finally running great last week, when all of a sudden I dropped the revs to much (after a long completely trouble free run) and the engine died.

I discovered today that I installed a non-ballast coil when the AQ170 does indeed have a ballast, so after realizing this I swapped over to a ballast coil thinking this maybe the problem, however this did not fix the issue and I now get no spark (I did have a weak spark with the old coil fitted).

Note I have fitted new points today also.

Any ideas?? Would running a non-ballast coil burn out the condensor possibly, or something else maybe?

Thanks,

G.

If you have 12v to the coil so you know you are good to that point, try swapping out the condenser. I had a new condenser fail after 2 hrs. It's a simple quick check and an easy way to eliminate that as a source of the problem. I have tried to test condensers like you would a capacitor with an analog multimeter (you get a quick spike on the resistance scales as it charges and discharges) with no success.
I wish someone would explain what will likely happen if you use the wrong coil. Will it burn the points or is the condenser likely to fail or will something else go wrong?

Me two!

Thanks Jon, I'm hopefully over the boat at the weekend (weather dependant) so will start checking voltages ect.
