"I will be putting a new head

"I will be putting a new head gasket and rebuilt head on my motor soon. Anything tricky I need to be aware of in terms of putting it all back together? I assume it's pretty straight forward...just reverse of taking it all apart. Is there anything I need to do to prep the surfaces of the block and head? should I use a little gasket sticky stuff to make sure the gasket stays in place on the block as I set the head down on it? Do the bolts/holes need to be cleaned and or oiled? I have the VP shop manual for the motor and it looks pretty simple in there, but I don't want to screw it up and have to buy a new gasket at 85 clams. I know I need to re-set the valves and then re-set them again after final torque down after 10-20 hours of run in time.

Thanks

"It should be pretty straightf

"It should be pretty straightforward, just make sure you follow the correct torque sequence with the head bolts (starting in the middle) and that the mating surfaces in both head and block are clean and dry."

"Thanks El. Hey, I just was

"Thanks El. Hey, I just was looking at the specifications sheet in the back of the VP shop manual and noticed a small foot note in there with a reference to engines with a "thick" head gasket. What's that about? Do some of the AQ 170's have a thicker/thinner head gasket than others i.e 170 A's thinner and 170B/C's thicker or something like that? If there are 2 types I sure hope I ordered the right one... Not sure if UPS is bringing a "thick" or "thin". If there are 2 types how do I know/find out which type I need?

Thanks in advance for any help on this one.

Matt"

"I always use the thicker gask

"I always use the thicker gasket now days as the fuel is not nearly as good as it was. The thin gasket makes the engine have more compression and more compression needs better gas.
Make sure the surfaces are also flat. The 130/170 engines had a knack of kicking the head gasket out of them if they weren't retouqued each year and the valves set. As El say's, follow the book and set the valves at .020 intake and .022 exhaust. Not a hard job at all."
