my aq170 has an elbow (appears to be pressed in) for a hose connection on the back of the cylinder head. Can anyone tell me if it belongs there and where the other end would connect to? I don't see it in any of the diagrams or manuals that I have. Should there be a freeze plug there?

I've never seen an elbow on the back of the head on any L6 V/P. Could this have been a auto head at one time or possibly a warm water recirc deal for divers?

"I have personally seen the head for the automobile engines and what you described is definitely an automotive engine head. That was a hose connector in the rear of the head that went to the heater core for the HVAC. I am surprised they didn't pull the fitting and screw in a threaded plug. Otherwise the heads for all pre-fuel injector engines are the same. There are 2 versions of heads in the marine AQ170A, AQ170B, and AQ170C engines. The AQ170A has small intake valves and the other 2 have larger intake valves. There are 3 varieties of automotive engines from the Volvo 164 car, one with the same small intake valves, one with the same larger intake valves, and the third with the same larger intake valves and six fuel injector port holes. Any automotive head you want to use will work just fine. But remember the larger intake valves variety will result in the engine running more efficiently. If you try to install the fuel injector head variety, the ports will need to be plugged with freeze plugs. One final note, I have seen 2 different bolt patterns on the marine three carburetor intake manifolds. I am not sure when or at what point the pattern was changed. On a marine AQ170B head, a marine three carburetor intake manifold would not mount to it. I had to locate another intake manifold which looked identical to get it to mount. The pattern was very close, but it would not swap over. Not sure what defines the break point in production. It could be as easy as small verses large intake valves or tied to the year of production, but I can’t verify anything for sure."
