"I'm at my wits end. Here&

"I'm at my wits end. Here's my problem. 1989 Glastream, AQ151C SP outdrive. Rough idle and misfires at higher rpm. The boats been abused in past, long story. Anyway, 2 years ago I had problems starting it, if I cleaned and reset points it would work fine, until next use. Then I had to reclean and set points. I installed new points, condenser and coil. This worked. I decided to get it back on the water this year. Hard to start and rough idle. Cleaned/rebuilt carbs and installed fuel water separating cartridge filter, didn't have one before. Ran hose to gas can with new fuel. I installed pertronix electronic ignition. During the install I found the new coil previously installed was only 1.5 ohms. I reinstalled old coil (which was 3 ohms). Couldn't get it to start. Found low voltage at + side of coil.If I jumped from + of battery to coil it would run. Cleaned all connections and grounds and ran pertonix wires directly to coil. Now I had 18 volts at coil, found alt. bad. Installed new one. Tried adj carbs and couldn't get it to idle smooth. After reading this forum I started at beginning. Checked compression cyl 1-165, 2-174, 3-170 and 4-170. Rechecked timing 6 deg tdc 30 deg high rpm. I can't get it to idle smooth and at higher rpms there is a miss heard out the exhaust. I'm going out now to check the timing belt. If it slipped one or more teeth would the timing light check ok and cause my problem? I just want to get it on the water, this winter the engine is coming out and being rebuilt. Any ideas?"

"Why are you rebuilding the mo

"Why are you rebuilding the motor it seems to still have good compression, I think your problem is something other then the motor itself. If you can set the timing and it is steady then more then likely the timing belt is fine, how did it run when you had it on a jerry can??"

"How about your mixture adjust

"How about your mixture adjustment? Rough idle can be caused by incorrect mixture. I agree with Bill, why rebuild an angine with that compression? You are running an old coil, try it with the correct new one, and it could be starving for fuel, as Bill said check your fuel pump.

Have a great day,

Rob."

That fact that engine is actin

That fact that engine is acting badly at high and low rpm suggests electrical.

I suppose the cam's cog wheel could have jumped but I doubt it. Probably the coil or bad high tension wire. Pertronix might have been damaged by high voltage. I would put that low on list. Start pulling plug wires and listen to idle change.

"In addition to the previous s

"In addition to the previous suggestions, I would check the ignition wires to make sure they have been installed in the correct order (1-3-4-2 clockwise) and that there is no corrosion in the distributor cap. Also, if you haven't changed the ignition wires for a long time, consider replacing them: many times they are the source of rough idling/running.

Before pulling the engine, consider a leakdown test. If you hear air hissing into the exhaust or the intake manifolds but not into the crankcase, then pull the head ad send it to a shop for a valve job, or replace it with a suitable automotive head."

"The engine has been on a jerr

"The engine has been on a jerry can of new fuel from the beginning. I knew the fuel in tank was old, so I just drained it out to use in lawn mowers. The reason I was going to pull the engine was due to the fact it had been left in water with no bilge pump long enough to rust a hole in oil pan. There's corrosion all over the engine. Right after I aquired the boat, we started out from the marina and engine died. Wouldn't restart. Found the raw water pump had worn a hole thru it's case and desinigrated and the temp went so high the engine stopped. I would guess there was some damage somewhere. So I thought I'd pull it, replace exhaust manifold and also fuel pump. 2 years ago when I replaced the points I also replaced rotor and wires and coil. The new coil was not 3 ohms so when I installed pertronix I put old coil back in. I think I'll pickup a ballast resister and reuse the new coil and see if that helps. I did pull the front off engine today and checked the timing belt. It was off at the cam and accessory pullies. The tensioner pully spring was highly corroded, so I pulled it and cleaned and greased it up. Added it to list to replace. I also noticed radiator fluid was low, I had just flushed and refilled system and retopped 3 times when installing electronic ignition. Don't know where it's going. I cleaned carbs and set idle/fuel screws to 8 turns from full in. The engine wouldn't idle at all at that setting. Took another 1 and 1/2 turns for idle, but can not find a setting that smooths the idle. Was also getting a popping from exhaust at high rpm, backfire I think. The accelerator pumps are squirting fuel down carb and I see a fairly good stream from around the center tube. I haven't reinstalled all parts yet to see if works now. The fuel pump I don't know. I think if I tried to remove fuel line at pump, to test it, I'd tear up the fitting. I'll try tomorrow to see if I can remove it.I have checked the wiring several times and it's hooked up properly from the dist to plugs. El, what vovlo car engine is the aq151c compatible with? I've also had to do alot of rewiring, seems my little brother thought he was and electrician. He was the owner till my parents saved it from a repossesion. All he did was party and beat the heck out of the boat. I always wanted a boat and felt sorry for my parents and bought the boat from them."

"El Correct me if I am wrong o

"El Correct me if I am wrong on this one. mixture screw should be 1 1/2 turns out for a starting point yet shouldn't go more then 1 1/2 turns either way. 8 turns out sounds a bit much are you sure that your float setting is correct, and or do you have any air leaks, just seems that your engine is running way lean."

"Went round and round with the

"Went round and round with the starting point. Went to Volvo site and had to use the aq151a manual 151c was in another language. It says 1 1/2 turns. Searched this site and found 4 1/2 and also 8. I have the Clymers manual and it doesn't have how to adjust. Saw alot of reference for the Seloc, so I purchased one. It says 8 for late model solex carb and the picture shows mine is a late model and mixture screw is 8 and idle screw is 1 turn. If it were the early model it would be 2 turns on idle mix. I do know that right now it won't idle with less then 8 turns. There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the float on the solex carb. Neither manual mentions it."

Thanks El. I guess I'll wait till I pull the engine and see what shape it's in. Be a good winter project. From what I saw on turbobricks they all want a marine engine for they're cars. Is that telling us something?

"quote "That filter before the pump might be the culprit, unless it's actually a separator (coarse, 30 micron) instead of a true filter (fine, 10 micronor less). Filters should only be placed AFTER a fuel pump." end quote
I installed a Sierra part #18-7775-1 fuel water separator kit for 200hp and above. The catalog says 21 microns. It's installed between the tank and pump. Wonder if this is a problem? Have only used fresh gas out of jerry can thru it."

"Hi Daniel,
from your descrip

"Hi Daniel,
from your description of the present condition of the engine I think you are on the right track in deciding to take out the engine for some much needed maintenance. This will give you a good opportunity to do it once and do it right. It will be a far cry from trying to solve a number of problems with the engine still in the boat.
I took my AQ151C out just to give me access to clean out and re paint the engine compartment and to re paint the engine itself, four years ago and I don't regret it.
You may not necessarily need to dismantle everthing but I would remove the head and calibrate the cylinder bores. If you find excessive wear then you may decide to go for a good auto engine or to rebuild your own whichever works out more feasible for you. If you are a skilled mechanic, have all parts on hand and can afford the time, you can do a complete re build in a week.
Re idle mixture setting, the VP manual says one turn out after gently bottoming the screw. I have found that on my old type Solex PAI44's the ideal position is 1.75 turns. I think the screw would fall out if I tried 8 turns!

"WRT the 151, if it's the

"WRT the 151, if it's the type of Solex with the mixture screw embedded in the base, it is probably 8 turns. You will know because a very thin screwdriver is needed. If it is the Solex where the bleed needle is set at an angle and has an exposed spring it is probably one of the other settings mentioned above."

"Lawrence, I think you're right. The insert in heat exchanger has a hole in it, I think the flush opened it up. Seems the more I try to fix the more breaks, but at least it's not out in the middle of the bay. I just throw my rag at it and walk back into the airconditioning.

The carb is the Solex imbedded needle valve. I'm not a machanic but I can take apart and put back together almost anything. It's also good to have a place to ask questions. Time, that I have plenty of. Just wish there was a volvopenta bone yard near me. One more question before I use a hammer instead of the rag. Since this is the marine version of the volvo B230, can I use gaskets etc. for the B230??"

"Daniel, I just realized you l

"Daniel, I just realized you live in Maryland I live in Severn, let me try and find my list but there is a few bone yards in Maryland that you can call.. off the top of my head have you called Fairwinds or Cobe marine both are alittle far but might be worth the trip. Ill get back to you with the list (once I Find it)"

"Bill, I'm in Havre de Grace. Thanks for the info. I haven't called around yet. I've given up getting it in the water this year. Going to redo everything in the boat and have it ready for next season"
