AQ151 Overhaul costs

Gents, I have a AQ151 with a 290 drive. I replaced the drive with a new 290 this past summer due to exchanging the drive oil with sea water. The engine has 2000 hrs and I'm thinking of just overhauling it for longer term reliability. Any thoughts would be helpful.

My thoughts: If you still have good compression and it still runs well... keep it in service. Do you have an electronic ignition? (if not, you should do a search re: pertronix kits) have you thought about upgrading the carb system? I think I'd spend money in those places first as long as the current engine still runs strong. Just my two cents and thats about all its worth. Good luck! Ken

They can be expensive to over-haul, so I too would recommend that you check compression, and if all good, run it!

I'd rather see you spend a few dollars keeping up on drive maintenance, so you don't end up with drive damage again.
Also, if you have never replaced the PDS bearing, it would behoove you to do so. (PDS = primary drive shaft)
Parts are inexpensive, the bearing/seal need NOT be purchsed through Volvo Penta.
The transmission ONLY needs to be removed..... not the entire drive! (cost is 4 new O-rings, plus gear oil)
Cheap insurance against the severe damage that can and will follow, if this bearing were to fail while up on plane.

.

Great ideas all! I will check with Marina. I believe the PDS bearing was replaced when we put the new drive on. If not I will have it done.

I have not checked the compression but I will.

I do not have electronic ignition or an upgraded carb but they sound like great ideas. The issues I am having with the enine seem to be:

Very hard to get started first time of the day. Someone told me this carb sysem doesn't have an accelerator pump and that it was normal.

After an hour or two run at high RPM, the engine doesn't like to go to idle. I have to put the drive in neutral and pump the throttle several times to get it to rest at idle.

I'm running this on a 22ft Sea Sport in Prince William Sound out of Wittier Alaska. Can be a very lonely place to breakdown.

If you do a search in this forum "weber conversion" you will learn more than you wanted to know about the subject. The lack of a choke on the single bbl solex seems to make them all hard starting and cold blooded as yours is. The weber conversion is supposed to cure the cold starting problem and add more get up and go as well. Rumor is that it not only gives more power but saves fuel in the process. I still havent figured that one out yet... Good luck!

A good used engine( fresh water ) may be far cheaper than to rebuild what you have.-----If it is a salt water motor they rarely come apart easily---------------Start looking / calling around.---------------Various dealers / E-bay / etc etc.------------------Various dealers using the search on " google " method as well.

  1. With the transmission off and out of your way, and if the PDS comes out easily, it is about a 1 hour job.
  2. It will have an accelerator pump, but will not have a choke.

This is an OHC V/P engine. To my knowledge, all of these OHC 4's had the closed cooling system.
Only the sea water system, the sea water side of the H/E, and the exhaust manifold would have seen sea water.
