AQ145a winterising

Hi, just a quick question. I have drained down my AQ145a engines every year for the past eleven years ready for the winter.

I open the both drain taps, one each engine, the one on the oil cooler and one on the exhaust manifold. I also blow down into the raw water filter to get the last drop out.

This year the port engine drained 30% less than the starboard. Having never had this before, is this something that someone else has experience of ?

Am I worrying for nothing as I cant see where the extra water could sit in the starboard engine compared to the port engine.

Any comments would be appreciated - Thanks

Did you probe the drain hole? Stick something in there like mechanic's wire. This will dislodge any sediment or scale blocking the drain. This should be done at every drain point any time you drain. I like to use a zip tie of all things; it's flexible and can make 90 degree turns in elbows and t-fittings for example.

Ditto Woodie's comment re; probing the drain ports. This is protocol, IMO.

As for the engine..... these OHC 4's use a closed cooling system.
IOW, there is nothing that is drained from the actual engine block and/or cylinder head, as long as the coolant (aka Ethylene Glycol solution) is PH correct, and is freeze protection adquate.

The sea water pump, the exhaust manifold, the sea water side of the H/E, any copper tubes, your oil cooler, etc, do need to be drained out.

.

Hi, Thanks for that, sound like good advice. I'll go down to the boat at the weekend , "put it in and give it a wiggle" as they say.

Regards
