Needing to rebuild my engine but I can not remove
the upper gear box. I have gone as far as chaining it to a fir tree and won't budge. This is a 1979 Bayliner. Is there something I haven't done ??? I can see that the u-joints are pertty rusty but I can't believe that pulling it with my Jeep won't break it free. Dave

"Well, I hope that you are kidding about the tree and the jeep!

Are you trying to remove the transmission only at this time? I hope so.
There is no need to remove the entire drive for this work. Not unless you have other work such as Pivot Tube bearing/seals, etc.
And even at that, you still want to remove the transmission only at first.
(Go back together in this same sequence...... Intermediate/main fork.... transmission last)

There will be a total of four fasteners...... two nuts/two bolts secured UP into the transmission housing.
If you remove these four, the only thing holding this in place will be some type of sealant that some knuckle-head put on there last time it was assembled.

Heat can be your friend on this...... a heat gun.... a small propane torch, etc. NO Oxi-Acetylene unless you know how to richen the fuel to oxi mixture, and even then, you must be careful to not over-heat this.

It will come off.

Watch for and inventory the shims between the trans and Intermediate housing..... they are critical to get back in place as they were.

To access the U joint AFT yoke "cap screw", the bearing box needs to be removed. The four clamping collar bolts will be your next challenge.
Again..... heat on the main gear case where the female threads are.

I've gotten to where I rarely even attempt to disassemble one of these without the use of heat!

You are another member who is just north of me in Washington State. I am in Portland, OR.
While I don't want to use this site for soliciting work (and I don't need the work) I have people ship these to me for repair if that interests you.

Not kidding about the tree. The trans. box at this time is only hanging on to the u-joints. If and when I get it loose from the engine I believe
all I need to do is remove the six bolts around where the spline is.
I will completely remove the bellows and get some heat on the situation. Thank you for your help. Dave

"OK..... I misunderstood your

"OK..... I misunderstood your description.....

What you have going on is the foward U joint shaft YOKE is rusted onto the Primary Drive Shaft...... Got ya!
Woah.... been there/done that one. It's a bugger!

Real quickly.... Here's what I'd do.
Pull a bearing cross apart and get the trans out of your way so that you end up with just the yoke stuck onto the shaft.
Now you can tap the yoke further onto the PDS and then pull some.... tap it back forward.... then pull some.
You may need to rig up a slide hammer affare to pull on it and "shock" it. Heat would be good also, but use caution. Heat will expand it some...... cooling will contract it some...... doesn't sound like much, but do this a few times and it may make a difference in-that it can break up this rust scale some.

You will no doubt have damaged PDS bearings that will need to be replaced....but that's the least of your concerns at this time, IMO.

"YES! I think I see some light! I will remove tranny tonight, and heat-n-tap my way to success.
