I have an older 19 foot glassply with an AQ140 and 280 leg. Is there any other newer model engine that will bolt up to this leg? Boat itself is in decent shape, motor giving me fits!

How much room do you have in the engine compartment? If you put a larger engine in you need to change the gear ratio on the lower gearbox. A V-6 with a duoprop would be a nice upgrade. Ricardo would be the one to talk to about your options.

Any of the OHC 4 cylinder Volvo Penta engines will work.
If you go GM V-6 or V-8, you will need to make some changes..... but it can be done.

Re; the V-6 or V-8, I would first find out if your exact hull was offered with either of these.

Thanks , I'm still weighing my options as I'm always having problems with this thing, unlike my 60 merc outboard on my tin boat that never lets me down. I live in British Columbia and my boat is basically stored outside in the winter. I'm always having carb issues it seems. I practically have to strip the darn engine of carb, circ pump and impeller and store in the house, a real pain.
I own the boat and it doesn't seem to be in bad shape ( haven't checked the stringers ) but mounts are good if that's an indication. I have contemplated putting a pod on and buying a nice outboard. Lot's of charter guys trade in around here and prices don't seem too bad. Maybe selling a running engine and leg may offset the cost somewhat? I can't afford the Kingfisher the wife wants! lol

I have an AQ150 in the warmer waters of Australia and can relate to the grief that comes with the older AQ engines - often its just a complete and frustrating lack of sensible and experienced mechanical advice. A new engine is going to cost big bucks - getting to like the old AQ is going to cost a bit too but now that mine starts(mostly) first time I am getting to like the old red lump and its twin carbs. Trick is to get the timing right and the carbs idle and air/fuel mix right and get electronic ignition and good fuel. Then there's technique of pumping the accelerator pump gently on start to get around the lack of choke. Right plugs help too. I rebuilt - not without a fair bit of grief (the cost was not the parts so much as dud advice and service) - the cooling system, new head from the wreckers, and a new exhaust manifold but now that its sitting pretty and behaving itself I reckon it was a much cheaper option than the 15K new diesel that my neighbour has (that still needs tlc!) Still a few parts around - I bought two old AQ150s here for $200 and in taking them apart I was quite concerned by some of the shoddy repairs and maintenance work done over the years so its very much a case of getting to do the job yourself with some oldtimer maybe who knows what he is doing and happy to talk to you as he does it. Not sure the cold weather is a factor- gets cold here but that's +3C at night on the odd occasion in the winter:)
