"Well boat ran in the yard the died again. Turns out the tensioner for the timing belt doesn't turn, so I am guessing that it is jumping the timing again. Question. I went to the junk yard found the volvo 244GL with the same engine, pulled the tensioner off, and all the timing gears since they were nice and clean. Can I use the timing gears on the boat? I noticed one difference, the boat has a solid gear and the one I have has holes going around it. They are the same size and teeth line up the same. Thanks. Dennis Oh. and would the stuck tensioner cause the belt to jump or slip?"

"Ralph, if a tensioner is stuck, it is not doing its job and it is further damaging the timing belt. I think you found the root of the problem.

I see no reason why you should not use the new-to-you timing gears if the size, number of teeth, etc are the same. After all, remember that your engine is nothing but a "marinized" car engine. One note of caution, though: the belt tensioner works on a roller or ball bearing, and the one you got probably has a lot of miles (running hours) on it. If I were you, I would install a new one, they are not so expensive and you need a new timing belt anyway.
