two question is the #1 cyl in the front or back got the boat last year runs good check the timing it is 35 to 40 out really confused on how to fix this not even sure how it is running

# 1 cylinder is generally the forward-most cylinder... and it is on this engine!

For your BASE advance and TAT (total advance timing), you need to refer to your Volvo Penta OEM manual for YOUR engine!
If you do not own one, it would behoove you to purchase one. :)

I can answer the first part: As you face the engine, the #1 cylinder is the closest to you.

I don't understand what you are saying or asking in the second part...perhaps you could try again?

#1 cylinder is the one on the front (that is, the one opposite to the flywheel).

If the timing is off so much, it could be because the timing belt has jumped. I would start checking the timing belt for broken teeth: if the timing belt is defective, just replace it. Make sure the timing gears are not pitted/corroded; if they are pitted, consider replacing them with an automotive set (either new or from an auto wrecker).

It could also be that the centrifugal advance springs inside the distributor are broken and/or the centrifugal advance weights are seized fully advanced. If the rpoblem is seized weights, lubricating and freeing them will solve the problem. However, if the problem is broken springs, I strongly suggest you take the distributor to a shop where they can install new springs, then test it to determine if the advance curve is within specifications.
