"Have you installed the timing
"Have you installed the timing belt correctly? If in doubt, you may want to verify this. With the belt temoved:
1) Align timing notch on the camshaft pulley with the mark on the valve cover.
2) Align timing notch of the crankshaft pulley with timing mark of the inner guide plate. Then you have #1 piston at tdc on compression stroke.
3) Align the timing dot on the distributor shaft pulley with the notch on the backing plate.
Install a new timing belt. One of its marks should coincide with the notch on the camshaft pulley, the other one with the dot on the distributor pulley.
Now, for the distributor.
1) Turn distributor shaft until the rotor tip points in the direction of the #1 terminal in the distribution cap. Turn the rotor 1/8 turn counterclockwise past the #1 terminal position, and slide the distributor into the engine. Verify that the rotor aligns with the #1 terminal when the distributor is in place. Also verify you have an adequate gap 0.016" in the points (skip this last point if you have electronic ignition)
2) Install the distributor hold-down clamp without tightening.
3) Install the distributor cap.
4) Connect the distributor lead to the coil. Make sure that the ignition wires are installed in the correct firing sequence (1-3-4-2).
5) Connect a timing light (probe in #1 ignition wire) and attempt to start the engine. Once it starts, rotate the distributor until (with the help of the strobe light) you see the idle speed timing marks in block and pulley aligned.
The process is well-described in the SELOC and Clymers manuals. I strongly suggest you should get a copy of them if you are going to be working on your engine."
