"Working on a AQ 131a. Had no power and would not idle except when warm. Rebuilt the card and adjusted the timing. It now idles perfect with timing at 6 deg. At high end under a load it still is not hitting max rpm’s. At full throttle we are getting 3100-3200 rpms, lower than it should be.

The gas is a bit old but has been stabilized and the idle is just to smooth for it to be just the gas. The throttle is going to full extension but the rpm are just not there. It is very responsive but just does not have as much power as it should. Plug gap is .028 and the advance is working great. Could it be the dwell and what should it be adjusted too?"

"Check with a timing light that the ignition timing is 32º-36º at 4200 RPM (test this with the outdrive in neutral if you have to). The distributor weights may be seized or the springs maybe broken. Also, the fuel fine filter in the carb (part 38 in the link) may be clogged

The fuel pump should deliver 2-4 psi pressure; if not, not enough gas may reach the carb.

And don't forget to check the anti-syphon valve in the fuel tank discharge. They tend to get stuck and then fuel cannot flow from the tank to the carb."

"Flyweights are free because we also overhauled the Dist. The advancement should go to 32, we watched it climb to 28 at 3200 but that was all the rpm's we were getting. Fuel filter is clean and happy, does not appear to be a lean condition at top end so should not be the fuel pump. Could we be looking at a dwell issue?"

"Maybe, or maybe just a spark plug/ignition wire out of commission. In any case, you may want to consider installing an electronic ignition kit to eliminate ignition problems related to points and condenser. I know that Pertronix works well (part #2842 is the kit for your distributor) but some forum members have been installing Hot-Spark, which costs a fraction of the Pertronix kits."

"Not sure on prop size, and the wires seem fine. Can you tell me what the gap should be set at and the dwell? I can not find it in any reference"

"The point gap is 0.016" and the dwell angle is 62º+/- 3º. The reference is in Seloc, you just have to buy it.
