My aq131a runs well at idle and cruise speed.when I try to open her up she overheats..? when i back off of the gas and slow it down just a little she cools back down and is fine....the dealer said to check water intake rubber hose from drive to engine for air leaks..it looks good..next he said to check timing...its set as recommended -6 degrees btdc @850 rpm....new impeller, looks good and is moving the lake water through the cooling system pretty good..when I put on the muffs in the driveway the water from the exhaust will gush in spurts rather than a steady flow..? I checked the manifolds and there clear. I don't know what the boot is called but, I have a tiny pin hole that I plugged on the large rigid booty on the out drive, this did not seem to help it any. Could something clogged up in the out drive? how could I check it? Info on my overheating problem I would be thankful.. Rich GREAT FORUM LOTS OF INFO

Check the raw water hose connector in the outdrive intermediate housing. It is probably corroded/perforated and in that case the raw water pump will suck air when the boat is on the plane.

The pinhole in the lower bellows is for draining the water when the boat is on a trailer, so I would leave it open. But is you have a pinhole int he upper bellows, you have a problem. That bellows protects the drive u-joints, and if water enters the bellows the u-joints and primary drive shaft bearings will be ruined. So if that bellows has a pinhole, you will have to replace it and at the very least replace the u-joints.

Have you checked the thermostat? Maybe its not opening.

You said you checked the manifolds, did you check the risers as well?

Also, to check what El Pescador said about it sucking air instead of water when on plane; you could run the engine in neutral when in the water at the approximate rpm that you run when at plane. If it overheats its not just an issue when on plane. If it doesn't its as El Pescador suggested.

BTW ... WELCOME to the forum:cool:

No way to "check" a 131 exhaust manifold properly. Most of the time a engine getting hot on the big end is a manifold getting plugged up. When getting hot on the small end it could be anything that El told you. When running on the big end a good portion of the water the engine is useing is impacted water thru the gills.
