AQ131a engine noise

I have an AQ131a. I just cleaned my distributer points, because the engine was bogging down at high RPMs. Cleaning the points seems to have solved that problem, but now I have another issue. The engine makes a noise that I would liken to the sound of popcorn popping (it almost sounds like a backfire) above 2000 RPM. The weird thing, though, is that it only seems to do it in gear; if I rev it up at idle I can't reproduce the issue. Anyone ever experienced this? Anyone have any thoughts?

It is almost impossible to "clean" the distributor points without impacting the dwell (and timing). Did you recheck dwell after cleaning?
