"Due to unfortunate circumstances, my boat sat for the last 10 mos with fuel in the carb. I dis- assembled and rebuilt the Solex 44 carb, drained fuel tank and filled with 92 oct fuel, replaced points & cond., plugs, checked timing & changed oil & filter. The engine starts and idles and putts around fine at 5-10 mph, but when I accrelerate, just before it starts to plane, the engine bogs down like it is starving for fuel. I check the fuel pump, and it has 5.5 psi and a pint and a half in 30 sec. at idle. The engine is not overheating. Any Ideas?"

"There is too much unsaid to respond but you might begin by indicating what the performance curve is. Does it actually run up to speed and plane or what? Does the engine backfire? Check the accellerator pump. Pull the cover, observe carburetor while pumping throttle. All I can think of now."

"The accellerator pump is work

"The accellerator pump is working, it shoots a good stream of fuel into the venturi when the throttle is operated. The boat accellerates very good, and as soon as it planes, it acts as if it is staving for fuel. It does not backfire, it just bogs down. If I back off the throttle, it will run smoothly, but only 10-15 mph, if I do not back off the trottle, the engine will die. It will start right back up after a few cranks, and will and idle putt around good, is very strong out of the hole, but acts as if it is starving for fuel as soon as it planes."

recheck your float settings in

recheck your float settings in your carb and also check your mixture setting of what you are saying it kind of sounds like it's running with the choke on (yet that carb doesn't have a choke)like it's either loading up really bad or like you said running out of fuel. have you pulled the plugs to see what they look like??

"I did not bend the float arm

"I did not bend the float arm at all when I dis-assembled and reassembled the carb, but I did recheck it and the top of the float is 1/4" from the top of the bowl housing with the needle valve shut off. I checked the plugs, and they look like new."

"I did check that the first time I when to the lake and it was clean. I will check it again tomorrow and post my findings. The prop, is the factoty installed 14 x 17, still in perfect condition and yes it would plane and run WOT perfectly before."

"Mike, try hooking a jerrycan

"Mike, try hooking a jerrycan with fresh gas to the fuel pump and see what happens. If the engine runs fine, then you have an obstruction between the fuel pump and the fuel tank (anti-syphon valve?)."

"That is a good idea El Pescad

"That is a good idea El Pescador! I don't think I will be able make it to the lake until next weekend, but I will do that when I go. I will check out the screen in the morning though."

"I had a similar problem, and found a *little* piece of crud under the needle / seat. I had just rebuilt the carb so I almost didn't even re-check, but lo and behold, there it was...."
