"I have an 86 bayliner with a aq131a. I had the carb rebuilt 1 1/2 years ago. Last summer when at higher RPMs it would periodically act like it was getting no fuel. I would back off and resume the throttle and be runing good. NOW, I started it 2 weeks ago (after 5 months of sitting) and it ran fine. But all of a sudden when I started it up today it started hard and then backfired and stalled out. I took the air cleaner off and when it backfired it threw a flash of fire. What could go wrong sitting after 2 weeks?"

I checked the timimg and see that the I'm off about 30 degrees. And my timing belt is loose. Is this going to be a pain to repair? I've not worked on marine engines.

"I would assume that if the belt is loose, that is the root of the problem. Get a seloc manual, and you should get step by step instructions on timing belt replacement.
But you should ask yourself,"why?" did the timing belt get loose? Did it stretch? do you have a bad tensioner? Correct that problem when you put a new belt on.....
Good luck."

I haven't gotten that far into it yet. But your right "why?". The belt has a lot of play in it right now and nothing has been touched. My guess is going to be a belt tensioner. But so far have not been able to locate that part to purchase online. Thanks

"I just bought a tensioner from an automotive jobber. Both my timing belt and tensioner are automotive. Far cheaper than going through VP for practically the same part.

Have a great day,

Rob."
