AQ131275 oil

"Hello,

"Hello,
I just finished reassembling my 275 outdrive (again). What oil is recommended for this drive? does anyone know? It is a 1986.

Thanks,
Justin"

"You've got the same year

"You've got the same year engine/drive combo as I do and I'm getting ready to get into the top half to replace the bellows. I also need to replace the exhaust bellows, but have not found the procedure for that yet.
I can get you the oil info when I get home later today, so I will check and see if anyone else got the answer for you between now then. Good luck."

"Assuming and i mean assuming

"Assuming and i mean assuming it is a single prop drive it runs the same weight as your engine, which i belive VP is recomending 30wt last i read in both the drive and the engine.

I run 10w40 in the enigne and straight 30 in the drive

Service manual says 20w/50

Approx 1.19US gallons of oil with new filter 1.06 gallons without new filter

Exhaust bellows is easy unless something obstructs you way of getting to it, should just take the clamps off and it comes off. A lot of people around here dont replace the exhaust bellows, i've seen some pretty ratty looking ones."

Use the same oil as you use in

Use the same oil as you use in the engine. I have an AQ125A with a 275 drive and my owners manual says to use 10W-30 which is the same oil they spec for the engine.

Should I use regular or synthe

Should I use regular or synthetic? Any particular brand?

I just replaced the exhaust bellows on mine when I rebuilt the upper gear box. Just raise the drive a little so you can get to the clamps and it comes right off.

"Regular old dino oil works fi

"Regular old dino oil works fine. The thing with synthetic is that if there is a leak in it, it will find it. The previous owner of my truck put synthetic and it leaked like a seive. When i changed it back out to regular dino oil the leak slowed down a lot. I didnt know it had synthetic until i found a bunch of quarts under the seat. This is on a 72 gmc. Enough about that

This old of an engine and drive i would stick to whatever oil you have been using in it. Dont get the cheapest but you dont need to spend a bunch. I get whatever oil change specials they have like 5 quarts of castro and a free filter for 12.99. Though for an engine filter i use the bosh brand they seem to hold up better in a marine enviroment then the rusted out sierra one that was on the boat when i bought it. Guy had it changed prior summer."
