"Hi-

I am sure this topic as been touched but i am looking for a little help. I have a 1986 volvo penta aq131 with a 275 outdrive. Wehn running at low rpm temp is low around 175, however when i open her up she gets up 225+. Ive been told by a few freinds who arent familiar with volvo's that mostlikely its the impeller and that i have to remove the lower unit. Can you advise me where the impeller is because ive been reading articles online and it appears volvo doesnt put it in the lower unit. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you"

"you are correct. the impeller

"you are correct. the impeller is on the engine. can't miss it. 4 bolts on cover, 2 copper lines attached."

"A small warning: If the pump

"A small warning: If the pump is BELOW the waterline, take off the hose at the transom plate innlet first if your boat is in the water!
Unscrew the lid of te pump and pry out the impeller with 2 screw drivers. Note how the wings are folded, and get them folded the same way when installing again. Put some grase on the impeller when installing no to burn it when you start up again."

"If the engine is still overhe

"If the engine is still overheating after changing the impeller, suggest checking for air leaks in the outdrive. The nipple/hose on the top of the drive tend to wear creating an air gap."

I have an older AQ130C that had the same problem even with a new impeller. I pulled the new thermostat out and it never overheated again. Even ran a little better.....Hope this helped.

Everyone thank you for the adv

Everyone thank you for the advice. i inspected the impeller today and its still very pliable and seems to be operating fine. i did however change my belt and the operating temp is hovering around 225 rather than the 250+ range. I think iam going to try the thermastat next thanx for the tip

"I had the same problem in my AQ131a , however i found out that the previous owner had operated it in salt water and did not flush out the system and i found that the raw water intake was clogged at the point where it leaves the outdrive and goes to a rubber hose and into another metal fitting to pass thru the transom with a large chunk of calcium. I discovered this by trying to force water from the engine down thru the transom via the rubber hose and found no water coming out of the bottom of the out drive. I poured CLR "Calcium Lime and Rust cleaner down rubber hose and let it sit for a day to break up the calcium then blew it right out with water the next day"
