"I am new to this, so thought I'd throw out a few questions, I picked up a nice boat with a bad motor for next to nothing (winter project) it has an AQ 130D engine that appears to have a bad camshaft (engine starts fine, but one of the pushrods does not move at all) Will an automotive B20 (I believe this is the auto equivalent of the marine engine) camshaft work? I was also given a AQ-140A motor(with all the exhaust manifold parts) that is supposed to be operational. It looks like it will fit with minor changes. Any thoughts on this, or comments on which is the preferred motor? All help is appreciated, I am getting quite an education in marine motors! Also what is the auto equivalent of the AQ 140A engine?"

Automotive camshafts tend to have too high a rev range for marine use. Marine cams are more like a truck cam.

"Thanks guys,

I suppose that it was wishful thinking hoping that the much cheaper auto cam would work. I have 2 volvo 280 drives, and the 1 bell housing for the 130/280 hookup. Are there alternative motors that are newer, lest costly too repair, and/or supply a little more HP that might work in my arrangement?"

"If the AQ140 is complete, I would go for it. Unlike the AQ130, the AQ140 is an OHC B21 block, fresh water cooled engine which has about the same HP as the AQ130 (125 HP versus 130 HP). However, you will need a different exhaust pipe bolted at the transom shield than the one you have now, and you may have to install new blocks to support the engine mounts.

If you want more HP, you will have to go for an AQ145 or an AQ151, which are B23 blocks."

"Thanks for the info
The AQ140 I recieved is complete, including the transom plate, all exhaust parts, and the 280 drive.(looks like the guy lost the bearing in the bell housing, and this blew up the damper on the fly wheel and broke through the bell housing) Both engines are the front mount , so it does look like it will fit with minor modifications. I have not had time to really dig into this yet, broke my arm, and the cast comes off tommorrow. Will an AQ145 or 151 bolt up to the same bell housing?"

"Yes, B21s and B23s do have the same bell housing bolt pattern."
