"I changed the water pump impeller yesterday and a few of the pump cover's screws need replacement (damaged head). The cover screws have a metric thread and are made of brass. I was not able to find a brass replacement at my local hardware stores but I did find a steel replacement. The pump's body is brass so I can see why the oroginal screws are brass but for replacement purposes, will I be OK using steel or is screwing a steel screw into brass threads not a good idea?"

I replaced all of mine since I also had a mix of screw head styles. Bought a bag of SAE #8 - 32x3/8 brass screws from Fastenall. They work and I keep a handfull of them in the boat toolbox along with the spare impeller.

"Mine have metric threads and don't seem to be readily available in brass, even online. The search continues."

"Bob, I would keep trying to get the screws in brass, they must be available somewhere. Alternatively, if I had not brass screws, I would use stainless instead of steel screws. And if all the stainless and brass metric screws in the world had disappeared and you had the only set left in steel

"Thanks El P. Assuming the worst and I have to use the steel screws, what is the reason(s) for coating them with Perfect Seal? Corrosion control perhaps?"

"Yes, and also to prevent them

"Yes, and also to prevent them from seizing. The coating prevents them from being in contact with water."

"Alternatively... If all the threaded holes are thru holes, i.e., not blind tapped, drill them out and use brass non metric screws, lockwashers and nuts. Bring a magnet when shopping for brass hardware. More than once I've found brass plated steel marked as 100% brass."

Thanks Robert. I had thought

Thanks Robert. I had thought of that but I'd rather not have to deal with the washers and nuts. I can find suitable stainless screws so I'll just use those.

"Don't forget to coat or lubricate them prior to installation, even if they are stainless (I know, I know, I may be a bit overcautious, but remember the ounce of precaution thing....)

I just ordered some brass screws from Depco Pump that should fit my pump. Heck, I may even coat them with Perfect Seal just to be safe.

"Hah...turns out the screws I ordered from Depco Pump and rec'd today are stainless steel after all, not brass as I thought they would be. I could have gotten those locally for 1/4 the price!"
