AQ130C Questions

"I have a 1975 Bayliner 2050 A

"I have a 1975 Bayliner 2050 Admiralty with the Volvo AQ130C/270 set up. I have been restoring the boat and am ready to re-install the engine. Problem is, the engine needs to be rebuilt. I can rebuild the Aq130C or I have the option of replacing the Volvo 130 with a Mercruiser 165HP inline 6/alpha 1 outdrive. I don't have enough experience with these engines to make an educated decision. The Mecruiser would be easier and cheaper to find parts for and offer more horsepower, but would require alot of modification to install. The Volvo 130 would bolt right back in, but will require a substantial investment to rebuild. Can anyone offer an opinion on which engine would be the better choice? I have heard the Volvo set ups are more durable than the Merc's? If I decide to re-build the Volvo does anyone know of a good source for internal engine parts? Also, a 4-cyl 130hp seems kind of small for a boat that is 20 feet long. Does anyone know how these engines perform in larger boats? Will it push a boat this big load with passengers comfortably? or struggle? Any help/advice anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!"

"Hi Kyle, I cannot answer many

"Hi Kyle, I cannot answer many of your questions but I can give you a bit of info: I was thinking of changing out my Volvo 4cy for a Mer 3.0 until I found it would cost me $1500 just to modify the leg hole in the transom. Also, check the weight of each engine and leg. I'm not sure but I believe the Merc engine you are considering is substantially heavier.

I have read on this forum that the Volvo engine is long lasting and more economical to run than a comparable sized Merc. Also, from information I've gained from this forum, I believe the original Volvo can be rebuilt/replaced with very acceptable results.
