"Running an old aq130c with 270 leg, starting overheating recently. So far have checked from the water inlet to the pump all good, changed impellor, checked oil cooler, rodded out exhaust manifold(quite dirty), changed themostat and temp sender. Just noticed on inside of oil filler cap white frothy oil (aargh). Is this a head gasket or something more severe? Any help is much appreciated."

""rodded out exhaust manifold(quite dirty)"

How old is the exhaust manifold? If it 'quite dirty' I would suspect this is the cause of your problem.

How does the oil on the dipstick look? Is it milky? If it is not, you may just have condensation in the valve cover. I would pop the cover, clean it out and change the oil. I would then try running the engine (once the overheating issue is resolved) w/o the cap to see if steam comes out. Also, check your plugs, do any appear to be 'washed'?"

"I dont know the age of the manifold but it is pretty old 10-15 years at least (fresh water use only) Oil in dipstick seems ok (oil was changed recently) plugs seem ok (again pretty new).
I will have to take the manifold off and have a look. What am i looking for on the manifold or is it just corrosion. One other thing, when i was checking water flow i ran the engine for a few seconds with the pipe from the oil cooler to the manifold removed, good water flow from oil cooler, but out of the water pipe entry to the exhaust manifold came exhaust gas, is that normal or shall i order a manifold now??"

The pipe i am referring to is

The pipe i am referring to is #23 on the schematic. The exhaust gas came out of the manifold where pipe #23 and seal #24 enters the manifold. Have run engine with thermostat end of pipe #27 off and get good flow so i think #21 should be ok.

"If you manifold is that old,

"If you manifold is that old, time for a new one. You are lucky that you got 10 years from it. Even if it has not yet failed it is close.

Have a great day,

Rob."

I will have a look at the mani

I will have a look at the manifold when i get chance. What exactly am i looking for or will it be obvious that it is no good. What is the approx water flow rate that the pump will give?

"Its not if there is good flow

"Its not if there is good flow FROM the T'stat housing with #27 off at the housing, from the housing, its...if any water gets THRU 27 into the manifold (and out!)when connected :).

The water injection point into the manifolds at the ports is prone to blockage (at least it was on my old AQ100...pretty much the same setup)"

Also per RobJ... even if you c

Also per RobJ... even if you can clear it out and get it to run OK... time for a new manifold (and elbow)...also new rubber rings on all "pipes"

"Also per your specific questi

"Also per your specific question related to #23.
If little or no water is entering the manifold from #27, and the boat is in the water, exhaust from the engine will take the path of least resistance and exit that hole (#23's hookup) in the manifold."

"Exchange manifold before it g

"Exchange manifold before it gets even worse. Check no4 cylinder exhaust port for corrosion. The thing is that heated raw water leaks into exhaust valve. Not so big a problem when running...the water most likely vaporize, but eventually you stop the engine and the water stays water. Water plus metal equals corrosion"

"Have a 1994 AQ 131A Used to run good. I had a backyard guy tune it up and now it runs okay.. until it gets under a load for a few minutes, then it pukes out. Once it died completely and I had to play around with the dwell to get it runing again. I noticed that there is a sheet metal screw holding the points in and I wonder if that is backing off and making the dwell drift. (oem screw must have gotten lost) I guess its possible the distibutor might have some play in it too. Should I just go to electronic conversion or buy a whole new distributor?"

"Dave, Try "Keypart Ltd" in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire Tel:- 01923 276000.

I just bought a manifold for an AQ145A @ £250 + VAT

Delivery was very reasonable - easy people to deal with.

Hope this helps

I thought I would add my findi

I thought I would add my findings to my AQ130

I went through this thread and tried all of the above except the manifold change. Here was my findings and the fix. I thought for sure it was the manifold but as I took off the back piece of the manifold I noticed the gaskit had small holes in it and was letting the water bypass the system. This was the problem and the cost was 2 bucks!!
