"I recently acquired a 1974 17 ft Saf-T-Mate with a AQ130/270T drive. After a few trips out I realized it won't hold trim. My 68-91 Volvo Penta repair manual points to leaky seals in the trim cylinders, but surprise, the 270T does not appear to have trim cylinders but rather some type of hydraulic spindle drive.

Anyone have a source for a service manual that addresses this type of trim system ? Better still, anyone have a suggestion why this type of drive won't hold trim ?"

"Is the "hydraulic spindle drive" inside the boat or outside. Specifically, if inside, is it on the transom on port side of boat?"

For clarity here's a picture of the unit.

"Considering this further, I wonder if this is a piston assembly and not a spindle drive. I assumed it was a spindle drive because it's in the same location and general shape of the electro-mechanical tilt drives which use spindle/worm drives.

The trim failure occurs under power, going from a trim out position to full trim in. I have no control under full power. I think that would be an unlikely scenario with a spindle drive. However, I can easily see how it could happen with a leaky piston seal.

I can't seem to find any information on this type of trim system to service it. Anyone have experience with this ?"

"the model 100 drive used that type of hydraulic trim. There might be a bleeder screw that just needs to be tightened, or a relief valve that needs to be cleaned."

"The trim ram on a 270T is on the outside of the transom shield at the bottom, and pushes against the bottom of the leg. You are looking at the tilt ram."

Not sure how that would work, trim ram and tilt ram running on one pump and trim switch ? There's nothing visible in the area you suggest. Any idea where I might find an exploded view of such an assembly ?

Also discovered that assembly in the photo also integrates the shift mechanism."
