AQ130/270 Tilt problem

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this forum and a new boat owner.
I purchased a 1978 Bayliner with a Volvo Penta AQ130/270.
The tilt does not work and when switch on dash is activated up or down it just
clicks. The previous owner said it just stopped working without warning but he did say
be hit a bump or something. What could be the problem and where should I start.
I bought this boat because motor sounds strong and i'm willing to work on it.
By the way thanks in advance for all you pros for you valuable time and advice.

Thanks,
Steve

Welcome Steve. I highly recommend you read the link El Pescador referred you to, but a very simple troubleshooting thing to try is to unhook the wires attached to the tilt motor (make sure you keep track of where they came off of) and then apply 12V directly to the tilt motor and see if that operates the motor. If there are 3 wires attached to the motor, the middle is ground I am pretty sure, with the other two being positives, one for each direction of the motor (ie. tilt up or tilt down). Only apply 12V+ to one side at a time, not both. This will tell you if the motor is good or not. I once had an issue where my tilt only worked in one direction and it turned out to be a bad motor. I simply replaced the motor and all was good again.

I fixed the problem the problem with the trim. The connectors were totally corroded.
The guy I purchased this boat from did probably zero maintenance.
He also sold me a motor that has milky oil in it! Did not see this when initially tested but fixable.

Thanks for the help, I will be posting new topics soon... I have tons of issues with
the aq130 motor.

I got it checked out and my head is cracked.
Took it for a pressure test and they confirmed it.
Found the the cylinder head for 100.00 from a guy in Maine but I'm wondering
if I should part this boat out and start over. What do ya'll think?

Yours is a raw water cooled engine and many parts are expensive to replace. If you can fix it cheaply, I would say keep it running until such time that repairing it is no longer economical. If not, I would try to adapt a 4 cylinder OHC engine (B230 block, AQ131 or AQ151) if you can find a used one in good condition. They are also old but they are much more common than the B20 blocks like yours. If you go that way, you will also have to replace the aluminum exhaust pipe linking the exhaust manifold to the transom shield.

Re: AQ130/270 Tilt problem/cracked head

I found an aq130c like mine ready for plug n play on express marine
1500 plus ship, ouch! the guy says it runs great but thats quite a bit of
money. maybe i can part mine out to offset some of those costs.

Yes, they are not cheap. Have you priced an AQ131 and an exhaust pipe?

Hint: If you have an old AQ130 and you are installing the same type of engine, you may want to keep the old one for spares. You never know when it will become handy, but at some point it will.

There are many 130/170 heads out there that are cracked. Make sure he guaranties his is not if you go that route. I know I have one that is NOT cracked guarantee'd.

I found a cyl head along with a complete engine and outdrive for
100.00 . I sent head to get tested and machine shop said it's in good
condition(no cracks), yeah! All the other parts i'm keeping as spares or
might sell a few on craigs or ebay. The guy I bought the engine/outdrive
didn't know that these parts are rare, anyways I don't think he liked
boating very much cause he didn't care about the boat. Well I sure appreciate
the deal he gave me.

Good for you!! If you plan on keeping the boat I'd keep ALL the extra's. A $100.00 bucks out of your pocket isn't going to break you and like we all know, Volvo Penta parts are like gold when you need to buy them. Oil them down and throw then in the corner.
