"Would consider myself a newbi

"Would consider myself a newbie as have old boat ('85 Invader) that we have had for about a year. After reading the posts it appears I was lucky as we didn't have any major problems during that time, just a prop and a tilt drive fuse and some electrical quirks (erratic gage readings). Purchased for $3K, interior is in great condition, so was happy until a month ago.
The boat overheated, the impeller was bad, so I replaced it. Saw a leak in the circulation pump so basically followed the seloc manual and took everything relating to cooling from the thermostat to the outlet from the strainer tank apart, cleaned of impeller parts out of the tubes and put all new gaskets, spacers, seals and thermostat in it (felt that fixing it before it broke would save a headache in the future). Well got it all back together (no extra parts when done), no leaks. Felt good after running (with muffs) a few minutes, didn't over heat either. Just as I was about to turn it off noticed new green fluid coming out between the two center cylinders on the head (intake side). Checked the oil, clean as new so it appears that I have no water leaking into the engine, only out of. Not sure if sealing the old leaks created tis issue, but am concerned a great deal.

Q1 I have basic car knowledge and had no issues with the earlier repairs I did, Is is more difficult to change the head gasket (which I am assuming is bad), or is it something more techincal, that I should have professionally done.

Q2 Can I use Car parts (oil filter, head gasket etc)? If so what Volvo Car engine is the same as the AQ125B?

Obviously we are all on these forums to save $$, just wanted some of the experts advise on if I can as well."

"Sounds like the head gasket i

"Sounds like the head gasket is seeping due to the overheating.
Yes you can use an automotive head gasket for about 30 bucks. It's a volvo 240 head gasket. Go with an 82 model and it should be right. I always use an auto oil filter. same year and model.
You need to make sure that the head is not warped though when you pull it off. Spend the extra 40 bucks and take it to a machine shop, or check it with a straight edge.
Good luck!!!!"

"Thank You!!

Time to start

"Thank You!!

Time to start tearing the top off and hopefully all will be OK. I do plan to drop it off at a machine shop as you suggested, as I really only want to do this one time."

"Got everything together, and

"Got everything together, and no leaks.

NEW PROBLEM
Took to lake runs close to 200, not sure what is causing heat as I can idle up to 2k without any issues, but at 3 to 4k coolant boils out of HE Cap temp really doesn't go up on gauge though. Slowing down to 2k or below it stops. Have new thermostat everything else was clean. Sea water side works great as I can touch the exhaust manifold anytime and it is slightly warm but never scalding hot like it was before I pulled the head.

This is quite frustrating as I have replaced every gasket and seal from the head up through the heat exchanger and finally no leaks but not sure if it is just the cap or something more.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I really want to get back to the lake before summer ends."

"If it is overheating at speed

"If it is overheating at speeds just below planing speed.... your outdrive is sucking air thru the water pickup tube seals. You'll have to partially disassemble the intermediate housing to get to them and replace those nylon washer/seals. (When idling along they are submberged. When on-plane the outdrive is scooping up water and pressurizing it past the defective seals. When just below plane, the seals are above the waterline and allowing the seawater pump to suck air.)"

"Thanks G A, but what is hot i

"Thanks G A, but what is hot is the coolant, not the sea water side coming from the lake water. This system has two types of cooling, one with lake water fed by an impeller...this is OK as the exhaust manitfold which it is supposed to cool is only warm to the touch while running. The one with the issue is the sealed system that uses coolant and circulates through the head and is fed by a circulation pump which appears to spin without issues (this side has the thermostat), thinking about using the old thermostat as everything else appears to be clean with new seals on this side."
