"I seem to be running into a lot of problems this summer. The other day at the lake my engine cut out, I tracked it down to no spark...

I removed the coil lead to the dist and turned ignition on, then I manually rotated engine and I got a spark as I would expect. I think this eliminates the coil and the coil wiring.

Removing the spark plug wires I couldn't seem to get a spark at all. I removed the dist cap and then put it back on, a few minutes later it fired up and went no problem. Next day I couldn't start it again.

This has the hot spark ignition. I am wondering how this system works... I believe that as long as it is allowing the coil to discharge at the right times when the engine is being rotated then it is working and doing its job and is probably not the culprit... From this diagnoses does it sound like it is the rotor or cap? Further, could the rotor or cap really cause it to cut out so suddenly and not start again. It is either running perfect now or not even trying to fire...

Lastly, will an automotive cap and rotor fit?

Thanks a lot, this site is great!

"I'm stumped by this. I think it is my Hot-Spark module gone bad.

Nothing in my system changed and then I was driving the boat and it just cut out.. It started twice for a bit but once shut off would not restart.

I held the coil lead to the block and turned over the engine with ignition on. I couldn't get it to spark. I then attached a lead from the battery directly to the coil and turned over the engine, now I get it to spark properly and the engine will run nicely.

Then I checked all the wires because it seemed like corrosion or a bad connection was causing resistance between the wires lowering the voltage at the coil. After checking all the wires I could not find anything wrong.

Then I tried to start the engine again using a wire directly from the coil to the battery and now it won't spark anymore???? The coil I believe is still good because it produces a nice spark when I remove the wire from the coil + to the battery +. It just doesn't produce sparks as the engine is rotated, which I believe is the job of the hot spark module.

I am lost, why would the hot spark work earlier today when the coil was directly connected and now it won't. Nothing has been changed between earlier and now..."

Ignore this question. I have covered the obvious and talked with hot spark. They are sending a replacement module. The newer modules seem to be a lot better as well as they can handle higher currents (1.5 ohm primary resistance) = 8A of current.

Excellent customer service shown by them. I have never had a problem in the year I had this product and now it quit and they are replacing it before I send my original back!
