"A couple of years ago, I was fed up with my Volvo AQ151C and thought it would be a good idea to rip it out and replace it with a small Merc, 3L I believe it was. So I went to Anchor Marine and spoke with the senior guy, (he's been there a long time and had sold my boat, new, to the original owner. I told him what I had in mind and I thought he'd be pleased at a possible sale. He strongly advised me NOT to proceed. He said that the Merc engine was heavier and, pound for pound, had much less power. His advice, fix the Volvo!
In my humble opinion, the only way out for we owners of old Volvo gas engines that are really crapped out, is, 1)if the boat is worth the time and money, to get rid of the whole I/O system, fill the hole, add a pod and O/B engine. Now you have an old boat with a new engine and you'll probably not get your money out of it when you sell. But, at least for some time, you'll have a reliable power plant. 2)Or, find a replacement engine the same model as the original, and rebuild to marine standards. 3)Or, failing all that, get rid of the old boat and buy another, much newer!
FWIW Tom.
And, Oh yes, flame on y'all.
