"I am finally getting close to

"I am finally getting close to putting this boat in the water!!!!!
But I have two questions.......
1. What would cause the engine to keep running after I shut the ignition switch off? I have rewired the coil to the switch, and it works fine now, but before I did that, the purple wire that runs back to the coil from the switch would stay hot after I turned the ignition off. Could it be the alternator?
2.I have noticed that she wants to run hot on me. The heat exchanger is clear, and the sea water pump is keeping the water flowing through the exchanger. This engine has an automotive thermostat in it. Can I run it without the thermostat? Wouldn't that keep the coolant cooler? I have to shut the engine down at 240, or it keeps climbing.
Any answers are appreciated."

Are you certain that you are g

Are you certain that you are getting water running through the raw water pump? PUll the heat exchanger cap while it is warming up and see if it heats up past 240 using a laser infrared thermometer.
It could be a bad sending unit.

"Its either the thermostat,or

"Its either the thermostat,or possibly the sending unit giving a false reading. I am going to bring my infra red gun home tomorrow to check it.
Still can't get the engine to shut down with the switch. I have noticed that if I excite the alternator, it will do this. If I don't give voltage to the regulator, I can shut it off. It has to do with the alternator I am sure.
I went to a one wire alternator. So all I have is the main bat. connection, ground, and a switched wire to the regulator."

Can the exciter wire be wired

Can the exciter wire be wired into the ignition so that is shuts down with the engine? Seems to be the simplest thing I can think of.

"Nope!!! I actually Disconnect

"Nope!!! I actually Disconnected that wire. The minute I touch that wire to 12 volts, It just takes over on its own. I can then disconnect that wire and try to shut it off, and she stays running..... It has to be something simple.
I need to figure out the other side of it.....like ground. Don't I? But that goes to the body and battery. There is something I am missing. Any ideas?"
