"This is such a common issue with old carbed engines I feel like I should know what the prob is. But I don't! Last Saturday, 4 times after shutting the engine down it spittered and sputtered for a few seconds until finally stopping. Once I even had to turn it back on and off again. Any idea's???????"

"Add octane booster to the fuel; and if that does not cure it, consider removing the head to clean carbon deposits from piston crowns and head.

Also, make sure your ignition switch actually works."

"El P, You know you must be the most reliable V P guy in the states. Everyone knows if they have a question they can come here, ask YOU and receive an honest answer that any gent can respect. You deserve much more than given brother!! Thank you!

What part breakage do you risk pulling a head on an older marine engine like so. If any?"

"None that I am aware of. But before you dismatle anything, type the word "dieseling" in Google and do a bit of research to see if you can identify another reason for what's going on with your engine. Also, sometimes running an engine at full throttle for awhile (under load, of course) will burn most of the carbon deposits in the combustion chamber that cause run-on and pre-ignition."

"There an old trick that old timers used to do,
and this sounds like it would cause more problems then cures and I personaly have never tried it so
try at your on risk, first warm the engine up And then poor a cup of water slowly into the carb, while reving it up to around 1500 RPM or at the speed where it will stay running with out choking down, an Old Man told me he used to do this back when cars were still running on leaded gas, This would help to break loose the carbon / lead deposits from the head bowls and valve's.
I could never bring myself to try this, Although I have talk with others that said it does work,
but you know them old Flat heads and Hemi's engines of them days could take quite a lot of abuse and still
keep running, unlike the engines built now days,

personal myself I just grab a bottle of STP fuel additive

It seems obviouos that the distributor does not have any influence in dieseling when you turn the ignition off but the engine keeps running.
