"Eric, the bearing in the flywheel does not turn. It is there just to support and center the primary shaft, but its inner and outer races do not turn relative to each other. Therefore, I don't think it can make any growling noise or anything of the sort.

Back to the original question, you may be able to remove the engine and leave the bellhousing attached to the transom shield, but it it is far easier (and faster) to pull engine and bellhousing together."
