When running in the driveway it runs smooth but unless I gas it slowly, it coughs and dies. The accelerator pump is new and not hesitating. I checked the timing and it was at about 30 degrees btdc at 800 rpm I corrected it to 10 degrees and it runs worse. There is no mark on the pulley so I made my own mark as best I could using a screwdriver down the hole and wrench to turn the motor. The carb is a solex side draft. I got a rebuild kit for it but it basically came with the accelerator pump, float valve, gasket and some different size washers. The carb is clean but I am going to double check it tonight. Compression is 190,180.190,175, seems like a ton but there is blow by while under load, but none in the driveway. I should add, the boat was sitting for years when I got it. It had dirty oil in it and compression was 120,110,120,95. After changing oil and running it for about 1 hour it had the compression readings before mentioned. Oh and new plugs cap points rotor.

No marks? How do you know it's 30 deg? There should be a mark someplace on the gears.Sometimes it's just a nick in the edge.
With out the timing being correct??? You try the air screw on the side of the carb?
Profile? You might be close to someone who can help.
Blowby is the timing being way off.J

So far the cam timing was off 1 tooth and the idle jet was screwed up. Since I need a new jet anyway I drilled the check ball thing out to see what happens. Revs great now but won't idle. I'm assuming it's because of the jet. Can't time it yet but other than the idle problem it is way better. I'll keep you updated.
