The float broke in the Solex c

The float broke in the Solex carb on my AQ120B. I have not been able to find a new float and have been told they are not available. I do use this boat on some cold days and it it very hard to start without a choke. I am looking for ideas about a replacement carb that would have a choke. Any ideas would be appreciated.

"Solex carbs do not have a choke but this is not a problem for starting in cold weather (and by "cold" I mean below freezing). Your engine comes with a sidedraft carb, but I see no reason why you could not replace the intake manifold and use a downdraft carb instead (which are much more common thatn the sidedraft). Something like this:

Thanks for the info on installing a down draft carb. Will the 125 carb use more fuel or have better performance? I am located in Canada and finding used parts here can be quite hard to do. The engine has been easy to start in warm weather but when it gets to freezing and a bit below it is a different story.

"Which part of Canada? You should not have any problems locating a manifold with a downdraft carb in BC. And regarding fuel consumption, it should not make any difference.

And if you want easier starts even in cold weather, try replacing the condenser and points in the distributor with a Pertronix electronic ignition kit, you'll love the results."

Thanks for the info on the electronic ignition kit - I am going to install one. Will it help with anything else other than starting? Will I use the same spark plugs and coil and will the timing remain the same? I just purchased the boat last year and only put about 15 - 20 hrs on it. Is there any other engine update ideas you might have for me? I live in Saskatchewan but I could inquire about used parts in B.C.

"David, the Pertronix electronic ignition kit for your engine distributor is number 2842. You should be able to order it through any autoparts store.

Some people also have installed the "flame thrower" high voltage coil and reported good results, but I am a bit wary in recommenting it as I am unsure on how well the distributor and the ignition wires can handle the higher voltage.

The Pertronix ignition kit should work fine with your current spark plugs and ignition wires. You will notice not only that starting is easier, but also that idle is smoother.

Regarding used Volvo marine parts, you can try basically any VP dealer, as they normally have a basement full of what for some is junk but for most of us is 24 karat gold

The latter has plenty of VP supplies, but I have to warn you: they are not cheap, so make sure you bargain before closing any deal."

For El Pescador: Thanks for the confirmation on the Pertronix ignition kit. I have been looking at it for my AQ125B for some time but have not been able to confirm that it will work in my engine.

"You're welcome, Walter. Not only will it work in your engine, but it will also improve your engine's cold starts and idle speed (just check with a timing light before and after removing the points and you'll see what I mean). I'm 100% sure you will love the results."

What other motor will fit in the place of this motor in my 85 bayliner with a volvo 270 outdrive?
