"Well it seemed like a good day to tear apart the drive. I found water in my ujoint bellow.

Last year I replaced the ujoints, intermediate bearings and the bellows.

Is there a trick to getting the bellows to seal? I installed them dry before. Maybe I should add sealent this time.

Any other advise?"

"I use Perfect Seal on mine, but even without sealant there should be no water ingress provided the ribbed areas of the boot are correctly installed in the grooves at the bellhousing and drive upper gear assembly. And of course, the clamps have to be tight.

Now, if you have had water ingress, you should make sure the u-joints are in good condition and that no water has entered the area of the primary shaft bearing."

I only have Permatex aviation

I only have Permatex aviation gasket sealent. Hopefully that's okay. It's upseting as I worked hard to repalce all those parts last summer and now this.

"Permatex Aviation Gasket will

"Permatex Aviation Gasket will work just fine. Again, make sure the ribs go in the grooves and that the grooves are perfectly clean. If the bellows does not have any tears or pinholes and you install it correctly, water will not find its way in."

"On this transmission, and since you installed new U joint crosses recently...... you'll need to know that the four clamping collar bolts can leak if not sealed correctly!
Point being, no matter how well you seal the bellows, if these allow water to wick up the bolt shanks, water can enter this area...... If so, this needs to be re-done.

This water inside of the bellows area will eventually rust the seal surface washer. The rust will then take out the seal.

"Thanks for the info on the clamping ring. I can't remember if I added sealent to those bolts or not. How does water get into those, aren't they threaded into the upper gear box?

Anyway I already put it back together.

The way this oudrive has gone for me, the seal surface washer and seal are probably shot already anyways.

I'll tear it apart in a few weeks and have another look. I've had enough fun for one day."

You will see this when you have the bearing box out of the gear case and apart!

Sorry I was feeling sorry for myself. I'll get back on it soon. That upper rebuild will have to wait for winter.

The info on this forum is great to us DIYers.

Thanks for all the help.

"Captmello, since that transmission was taken apart as recently as a year ago, you can probably have it apart and back together in about two/three hours."

"I guess I thought I needed special tools to set it up correctly as well as reshiming to the intermediate.

I'm all for fixing it if its bad, however I don't know for sure. Can you test the seal? However, as I stated earlier, the intermediate bearings were shot as well as the ujoints when I got the boat last year.

I'm a bit gunshy now that I found myself incapable of installing a new bellows after all the work I did last year.

Again, sorry for whining."
