"hi can anyone help me. i have a fjord24 with two aq170/280 engines. the problem i am having is with just one of the engines after its been running for a few hours. you can be going along at 200rpm no problems but push the throttle a bit more about haif way and it coughs splutters and pops trying to die on me but if you wheak the throttle full open she picks up and runs perfect then if you slowly back off it starts slowing down then picks up on its own whilst im backing off the power it does this with both or just the bad engine on its own. what i have done so far is replace the plugs, points, condencors balenced the carbs new fuel filters. im no machanic but could it be a fuel pump problem. thanks barry"

sorry i meant to say 2000rpm n

sorry i meant to say 2000rpm not 200 and whack not wheak. spoke to a guy today told what was happenig and told him that when its having the problem the rev counter goes up and down realy fast so he thinks its ignition side of things ?

"One possibility is that the accelerator pumps are not doing their job and need to be adjusted.

When you replaced the points and capacitors, did you check the condition of the distributor springs and advance weights? You may want to do that and verify that the springs are not rusted/broken and that the weights are not seized. It just takes to remove the plate below the points. Also, make sure that the points are gapped correctly, if possible with a dwell angle meter.

Something else you may want to check is that the anti-syphon valve by the fuel tank pick-up line (if installed) is working correctly, and that there is no water trapped in the fuel filter."

"It depends on the type of tachometer. If the gauge is well damped and not prone to jittering the problem may be with the coil or the resistor which is in series with the coil. A bad condenser can also cause this but I believe you said it is new? By way of explanation, when the throttle is pushed forward very high pressures are created in the cylinders. These pressures have a tendency to "blow out" a weak spark. When the throttle is suddenly pushed back, similar forces are created. The engine sees a resistance which is actually an anti-rotational force produced by fast flowing water against the slowing propellor. "

ok i will have a look at the springs and advance weights but why does it start missbehaving after a few hours use and not before could it be the coil breaking down?

"Yes, it could be a coil probl

"Yes, it could be a coil problem. To clear the doubt, just replace it: they are not expensive."

"Barry, replace the resistor a

"Barry, replace the resistor and coil together. I suspect these items are rather old and so both may react badly to heat."
