"1) Definitely, use the flapper. Not doing so can make raw water reach the cylinders and hydrolock and/or seize your engine.

2) What "raw water pump in the outdrive" are you talking about? Unlike Mercruisers, Volvo Penta does not have raw water pumps installed in the outdrives. The only raw water pump in an AQ151 is the small pump with two copper pipes located by the alternator."

"In my opinion, sucking water through-hull can cause more problems than benefits. I have found picking water through the outdrive is very reliable and seldom causes problem except perhaps for the dreaded raw water hose connector becoming corroded or the lower o-ring in the pick-up tube becoming defective or being wrongly installed."
