I have a houseboat with twin A

I have a houseboat with twin AQ145a engines and 280 outdrives. the outdrives are in great shape but both of the engines are getting a little worse for wear. My question is this: What are my power options for the 280 outdrive and what do i need to keep in mind to keep it somewhat simple. I really want to step up to 6cyl or v8s but will stick with the 4cyls if it means an absurd amount of work.

As usual... thanks for the help!!!!!

"It all depends on what an "absurd amount of work" means to you.
Volvo outdrives have built in reduction gears. There is a different ratio for 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines. The reduction gears are located in the lowest most portion of the outdrive units.
If the house boat has a displacement hull you can put 1000 hp on the hull and it won't go any faster."

"Ok.... Guess I need to be mor

"Ok.... Guess I need to be more specific. House boat with V8s goes 35mph so no... not just a displacement hull. Are reduction gears the only thing I need to worry about? Was concerned I would have to modify stringers/motor mounts/transom holes for correct angle. If it is just a matter of changing reduction gears, that to me, is not an absurd amount of work.... I was mainly interested in what it would take to keep the 280's with a larger newer engine."

"Probably new gears, new trans

"Probably new gears, new transom shields (around $1500-$3000 each), new exhaust pipes (around $1000 each), new bellhousings ($500 to $1000 each), new exhaust manifolds ($600-$800 per set). Now get hold of your calculator, throw labour in, and do a rough estimate (but please, don't faint).

Every year there are a few people asking what engines can they replace their 4 cylinder VP OHC engines with, and I keep giving them over and over the same answer: if you want to install a bigger engine, get the whole package (engine, exhaust, transom shield, drive, used in good condition); and if you find it is too expensive, stick to what you have. Any alternatives you try will end costing you far more than either of the above two options."

"El Pescador,

Thanks.. that

"El Pescador,

Thanks.. that is what I was looking for! Assuming that I just wanted to replace with same but want a new engine.... is the vp 3.0 a direct bolt on to my 280?"

"There are plently of availabl

"There are plently of available parts to create just about any swap that you would want to do in the AQ series drives.

The more labor intensive and expensive items will be transom shield and exhaust replacements and finding two 1.61:1 lower units in good condition.

The shields that you have currently are a Single Exhaust Releif shield...... the later AQ series V-6/V-8 engine exhausts will not work with this.
Well, there is one! And that is the AQ 200B single relief 3" Y pipe that will work with the 4 cylinder transom shield.
Hard to find, and you must then go with 3" exhaust! Barr for example. It is doable! I've done this several times.

Your problem is finding two of each!
Is it worth doing would be the question!
